Kathy Lee
Kathy Goun Lee is a contemporary fiber artist born in Bad Kreuznach, Germany, raised in Los Angeles, California, and currently based in Sandy, Utah. She creates abstract sculptural works using wool as her primary medium. Her practice explores the psychology of personal and social narratives, shifting identities, and the insights that emerge through observation and stillness.
Her practice centers on the use of wool, jute, cotton, and other natural fibers to create contemporary abstract fiber sculptures. Through an iterative process of weaving and wrapping, she integrates wool with jute and interlaces wrapped fibers within woven structures to build layered, three-dimensional forms. A defining characteristic of her work is this technique of weaving through weaving, which expands traditional fiber practices into spatial compositions distinguished by depth, complexity, texture, and the expressive potential of natural materials.
Kathy Goun Lee’s work is guided by an inner creative impulse and a meditative process of exploration and reflection. Through the use of natural fibers, she examines the connection between human creativity and the natural world, reflecting on art as a fundamental expression of what distinguishes humanity from other living beings. By engaging with fiber’s historical associations with women’s labor and repositioning it within a contemporary artistic context, she seeks to expand its perception beyond traditional craft and highlight its capacity for personal, cultural, and artistic expression.
The works presented here are from Kathy Goun Lee’s Restraint Series (2022), which explores the value of restraint in a post-pandemic world marked by excess and immediate gratification. Through this series, she reflects on restraint as a deliberate practice that can cultivate creativity, balance, and transformation. Contort 2 and Contort 3 are composed of knotted jute structures wrapped with wire and wool; while their forms appear defined, their flexible structures allow them to shift and adapt. These works reflect the human capacity for
change and the ability to reshape oneself in response to evolving circumstances.

Vincent Mattina
My art delves into the pervasive influence of the digital age, weaving together threads of spirituality,
environmental consciousness, and technological expansion. Through densely layered digital
collages, I construct dreamlike realms where familiar visual cues of time and space are reimagined.
Symbols like water and seascapes evoke themes of the unconscious mind, while abandoned spaces
reflect our negative impact on the environment. The integration of mechanical elements with organic
forms hints at the evolving relationship between technology and humanity.
My process begins with sketching concepts on paper, which I then develop in Photoshop to create
digital collages. These collages are further translated into mixed media, laser engravings, and
assemblages. The assemblage works, made with found objects, may also incorporate digital
artworks in print form. Some works, incorporating found objects, explore the themes of climate
change, transhumanism, and the spiritual realm and are sometimes infused with personal narratives
of sleep deprivation and its distortion of reality. I create mixed media pieces on custom wood panels
that I fabricate myself. On these panels, I trace the design and employ acrylic paints, wood stains,
colored pencils, pastels, and collage.
The subject matter dictates the palette and imagery, ensuring each piece is a unique exploration of
these interconnected themes. Driven by ongoing research, my work continually evolves, each series
building upon previous inquiries and fostering new areas of investigation.
